LEGO Marvel’s Avengers for Windows (PC) is an action-adventure game developed by Traveller’s Tales and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Released on January 26, 2016, it is part of the LEGO video game series that adapts popular film franchises with the brand’s signature humor and puzzle-platforming gameplay. The game’s story draws primarily from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), but also includes segments based on Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The narrative is told through a combination of cinematic cutscenes using dialogue taken directly from the films and original LEGO-style comedic moments. Gameplay consists of the familiar LEGO formula: players control characters in third-person view, smash objects to collect studs (the game’s currency), solve environmental puzzles, and battle enemies in action sequences. LEGO Marvel’s Avengers expands on this formula with “Avengers Team-Up Moves,” which allow certain pairs of characters to perform unique combination attacks. In addition to the main story missions, players can freely explore open-world hub areas such as New York City, Asgard, Malibu, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Barton Farm, Washington, D.C., and Sokovia. These hubs feature side quests, races, puzzles, and collectibles. There are over 200 playable characters available, including popular Marvel heroes and villains, as well as lesser-known characters making their LEGO game debut. Many characters have abilities based on their powers from the comics and movies. For example, Iron Man can fly and shoot repulsor beams, Hulk can smash large objects, and Black Widow can use stealth. Stan Lee also appears as a playable character with unique abilities. The game uses voice acting sourced from the Marvel movies, with some original recordings for additional dialogue. LEGO Marvel’s Avengers supports single-player and local co-op multiplayer, allowing two players to team up and play through the story together. The PC version requires at minimum a dual-core CPU, 4 GB RAM, and a dedicated graphics card with at least 1 GB of VRAM. The game is available through Steam and other digital storefronts. A season pass was offered with additional content packs based on other Marvel properties, adding more characters and missions. The game does not feature microtransactions beyond the paid downloadable content. LEGO Marvel’s Avengers received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised the large character roster, humor, and open-world segments, but noted that the game was very similar to previous LEGO Marvel titles and did not introduce major gameplay innovations.
